Health and Wellbeing

At Avenue, we take a whole-school approach to promoting positive health and wellbeing, which is central to our commitment to pupils’ personal development. We are dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment in which pupils feel valued, listened to and supported.

Our school culture actively promotes openness, understanding and respect around mental health, enabling pupils, staff and parents/carers to engage in meaningful discussion and reducing stigma. We recognise our responsibility in supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing and in helping to prevent mental health difficulties, ensuring that all pupils are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

We play a key role in enabling pupils to succeed and reach their full potential by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to maintain positive mental health and develop resilience. Through our curriculum, pastoral support and wider enrichment opportunities, pupils learn how to manage their emotions, recognise factors that may impact their wellbeing and understand how and where to access appropriate help and support.

Impact

The impact of Avenue’s exemplary whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing is evident in pupils who feel safe, supported and ready to learn. Pupils demonstrate strong emotional literacy, positive attitudes to learning and the confidence to talk openly with trusted adults. They show resilience, empathy and self-awareness, enabling them to manage their emotions effectively and make positive choices. This focus on personal development contributes positively to pupils’ behaviour, attendance and overall wellbeing, ensuring they are well prepared for the next stage of their education and able to achieve their full potential.

Building Stronger Foundations

Building Stronger Foundations (BSF) is a programme created by Sutton Virtual School that helps schools build positive, supportive relationships with children. The programme focuses on helping staff understand children’s emotional needs and respond in a calm, caring and consistent way.

Through BSF, staff learn practical strategies to strengthen relationships with pupils, helping children feel safe, understood and valued. When children feel secure and supported, they are more able to manage their emotions, settle in school and engage with their learning.

This approach benefits all children, not just those who have faced difficulties. It helps create a positive and inclusive school environment where every child feels a sense of belonging. We understand that developing this approach across the whole school takes time, and we are committed to embedding it carefully and consistently.
