Child photos and plant diary

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our topic next term is circle of life. As part of this we will be studying different life cycles including plants and humans. As part of the hook, we would encourage the children to bring in an early childhood or baby photo to share with the class so we can play guess who. This helps children to see the changes they have already gone through in their life cycle.

We would also like to encourage children to observe different plants in their local environments over the half term. This could be recorded on a piece paper with pictures or sketches or however else they would like to. This would be beneficial for them in preperation for the next topic.

Anti - Bullying week is 11th - 15th November

We will be recognising Anti-Bullying Week on Tuesday 12th November

Children are invited to come to school wearing odd socks on this day if they would like to.  We wear odd socks to celebrate our uniqueness, challenge stereotypes, and promote acceptance.

Children will be participating in activities on the day which discuss bullying and what they can do if they need help.

Black History Month

Throughout the year there are months that celebrate the history of different groups of people. These months help us to learn more about people, their history and their importance to the wider world. Black History Month is celebrated each year in October. It is a chance to celebrate the achievements of black people past and present.

Children will be taking part in activities this month

Year 5 DT

Dear Year 5 Parents,

We hope this message finds you well. As part of our Design and Technology curriculum, the children will be creating their own Dark Ages dwellings. To make this project a success, we kindly ask for your support in providing building materials such as cardboard, glue, string and other materials you think might be useful.

Please send these items with your child by Tuesday 8/10/24. Your contributions will greatly enhance the learning experience and creativity of our students.

Thank you for your continued support!

Best regards,Year 5 team

World Mental Health Day

Thursday 10th October is World Mental Health Day.  To raise awareness of the importance of good mental health, schools across the country are inviting the children to wear a yellow accessory to school for the day if they would like to. Yellow is a colour that symbolises hope, optimism and happiness.

In class, children will be taking part in an activity to discuss mental health.

Children must still be in full uniform but can also wear something yellow such as:

Yellow socks

Yellow badge

Yellow ribbon

Yellow hat

Yellow hair accessory

Or any other yellow accessory you can think of!

Children do NOT need to bring in any money or donations and the yellow accessory is voluntary.

Dorset Road

From Monday 23rd September, pupils in KS2 who enter the school via Dorset Road Gate will enter the building through the Nursery Garden. They will walk around the side of Junebug classroom and into the Nursery Garden where they will be able to enter the school via the external door to the Studio Hall. Staff will be there to support children getting into school.

Winbooks

As part of our partnership with Microsoft each child in Year 5 has been given a Acer 1:1 winbook device. Each child has been given a device lending agreement. If you would like your child to be able to take their WinBook home please return the agreement signed to their teacher. If you do not want your child to take their WinBook home, return it unsigned and your child will still be able to use it in school but not take it home.

Once the teacher has received the lending agreement your child will be able to take their device home each day and charge it. The device can be used at home to access the home learning and other educational websites. The device should be bought into school each day (fully charged) to be used in lessons.

If there is any damage or issues to the WinBook please contact your child's class teacher through the office.

French Trip Updates

Day 3

3a

Wednesday 18th June

A Fantastic Day in France

We've had another wonderful day here in France!

The children were up bright and early, full of excitement for the jam-packed day ahead. After a hearty breakfast to fuel them for the activities, we set off on our first adventure.

Our morning began with a short walk to a local goat’s cheese farm. The children watched a fascinating film about how the cheese is made and how the farm is run. Afterwards, they had the chance to meet the goats in the fields – some were even brave enough to give them a gentle pet! To top it off, everyone enjoyed tasting a selection of flavoured and spiced goat’s cheese – with many children coming back for seconds!

Next, we travelled to a beautiful château where the children worked together to complete a treasure hunt, uncovering facts and stories about the castle’s history. They also enjoyed some traditional medieval games, including skittles and a child-friendly version of jousting – lots of fun was had by all!

Our final visit of the day took us to an apple orchard. The children learned how apples are grown and harvested to make apple juice, and of course, got to sample the orchard’s fresh juice – it was delicious!

We’re now winding down for the evening. The children are busy packing their bags, showering, and getting ready for our final dinner together. After that, we’ll settle in for a good night’s sleep ahead of our journey home tomorrow.

We are so proud of the children today – they have listened carefully, shown respect to all the adults they’ve met, and made a real effort to speak in French. They’ve been a credit to themselves, and to all of you.

A huge thank you to all the teachers and teaching assistants who have given up their time and energy to make this trip possible – it’s been a truly special experience.

I’ll be in touch via the school office tomorrow with an update on our arrival time back at Dorset Road. Please remember to let us through the gate and have the children lined up before coming in to collect them.

Miss Guy

DAY 2

2d

Tuesday 17th June

Today has been fantastic! The amount of times we have heard the children say ‘wow’ has been brilliant!

We started the day with a big, delicious breakfast of: pastries, ham, cheese, fruit, cereal and yoghurts before gathering our packed lunches and heading out for the day.

We set off for the D-Day experience where the children went on a real-life simulation of a paratrooper's journey and watched a 3D film explaining the history of the D-Day landings. The children then explored the fascinating museum and visited the shop.

Following this we spent some time in the village of Sainte Mere Eglise and visited the local bisuciterie.

After, we headed to a local farm where the children made chocolate bread and watched a French baker cook this in the traditional French ovens. We were then able to enjoy our bread whilst exploring the farm and playing with traditional French outdoor games.

We ended the day visiting Utah beach where the children were able to link their new history knowledge from the D-Day experience. They also had time to enjoy the beach and the wonderful views.

We are now back at the hotel where the children are showering and getting ready for dinner!

We can’t wait to explore more of Normandy tomorrow!

We have all arrived safely at our hotel!

Monday 16th June

After an early start we begun our journey to France! The children were so excited and clearly very eager to get to the ferry; for some, this would be their first trip on a boat! We made it through passport control smoothly before waiting for our turn to board the boat.

On the ferry, the children were treated to a mini breakfast of sausages, bacon, eggs, toast and hash browns! They then enjoyed the views out of the window and made sure we all knew when land was in sight! One child spotted seals on the beach which was met with great excitement from the children.

Following the ferry, we boarded the coach and began our drive to the hotel. Half way into the journey we stopped for the children to have a run around and snack before departing for our final leg of the day.

The children (and adults) were so excited to see the hotel and find out who they were sharing bedrooms with!. They quickly put their belongings in the rooms and are now on their way to dinner.

Everyone has been brilliant today and really embraced the journey with lots of singing, card games, chats and patience. We are all excited about what tomorrow brings and will update you tomorrow evening with our adventures!

Please be assured that the children are all fine and having a great time away!
