PE Events and Pupil Selection
Throughout the academic year, pupils have opportunities to represent the school in a range of sporting competitions and events. Selection processes vary depending on the nature of the sport and competition.
We aim to ensure that selection is fair, transparent and based on appropriate sporting criteria, while providing opportunities for pupils to participate in extracurricular sport and represent the school.

| Boys' Football | Year 6 | Trials take place in school, giving interested pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. The school squad is then selected by our external football coaches based on performance during the trials. |
| Girls' Football | Years 5 & 6 | Pupils are invited to sign up for the extracurricular football club. The school squad is selected from pupils who regularly attend the club, based on their participation and performance. |
| Tag Rugby | Years 5 & 6 | Pupils are invited to sign up for the extracurricular tag rugby club. The team representing the school is selected from pupils attending the club, based on their participation and performance. |
| Swimming Gala | Relevant year groups | During the Spring Term, pupils are timed across a range of swimming strokes by our swimming teacher. The fastest swimmers in the required events are invited to represent the school at the Swimming Gala. |
| Cross Country | Years 4, 5 & 6 | During the Autumn Term, pupils take part in cross-country races within school. Teachers put forward the fastest-performing pupils, with the strongest performers across each year group invited to represent the school at the competition. |
| Athletics / Borough Sports | Relevant year groups | During the Summer Term, pupils compete in races and athletics activities within school. Teachers identify pupils who perform strongly, and these pupils are invited to attend athletics club. Performance at the club is then used to select pupils to represent the school at the Borough Sports event |
| Netball | Years 5 & 6 | Pupils are invited to sign up for the extracurricular netball club. The school squad is selected from pupils who attend the club, based on their participation and performance. |
Representing Our School
Being selected to represent the school is both an opportunity and a responsibility. Pupils are reminded that when attending fixtures, competitions and sporting events, they are representing the whole school community.
Pupils are therefore expected to:
- demonstrate excellent behaviour at all times;
- uphold and model the school's values;
- show respect towards teammates, opponents, officials, coaches and staff;
- demonstrate good sportsmanship, whether winning or losing;
- listen carefully to instructions and represent the school positively; and
- show commitment to their team and the event for which they have been selected.
While sporting performance is an important part of team selection, pupils' behaviour, attitude, commitment and ability to uphold the school's values are also important considerations when representing the school.
Our Approach to Participation
We recognise that competitive school sport is one part of our wider PE and physical activity provision. Alongside opportunities for pupils to represent the school competitively, we aim to provide extracurricular clubs and sporting opportunities that encourage participation, enjoyment, inclusion and the development of sporting skills for pupils of different abilities and experiences.
Where competitions require a limited squad or number of participants, selection will be based on the criteria outlined above and the requirements of the individual event.
