Additional support and activities

 

Our teachers and teaching assistants are trained to provide support through a range of resources and strategies.  These include but are not limited to;  Makaton-used alongside spoken language and visuals to support communication.

 

Visuals – pictures used to aid understanding (used by all staff).

 

Intensive interaction - a communication approach aimed at developing interaction and communication abilities between children and adults with communication needs and the people in their environment.  

 

PECS – (Picture Exchange Communication System): A specialist approach is used to help children to communicate by the exchange of pictures. When people become stressed they use the language that they have, and therefore, it is a useful technique for many of our children to have mastered.

 

Emotions Scale – this helps us teach children about emotions and to recognise them in themselves and others.

 

Social stories – to help develop understanding of social situations children are finding difficult and to prepare them for transitions.

 

Dinosaur school/Taming the Tempersauras /Friendship terrace– Fun, challenging and interactive activities to support children in developing their social skills. 

 

Lego Therapy – A structured therapy group which promotes social interactions and speech and language skills.

 

Attention Autism (Magic Bucket) – This is a creative and highly effective method of building attention and early communication skills. It teaches these skills using engaging, stimulating activities and resources which come from our Magic Bucket.

 

Zones of Regulation – a curriculum geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities.

 

RoundAbout Dramatherapy – Dramatherapy is a form of psychological therapy which uses drama related techniques such as storytelling, metaphor, play and movement, improvisation, puppets and music, to support people to understand themselves and make positive changes in their lives.

 

Emotion coaching – nurturing and supporting pupils in developing emotional literacy.

 

Sensory circuits – a short and snappy sensory motor skills programme that helps to regulate children’s sensory . It enables children to reach the level of alertness needed to concentrate during lessons

 

Our staff also work closely with our Speech and Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist to deliver and support programmes specifically designed for our children.
