Religious Education

Intent

At Avenue Primary Academy we believe that Religious Education (RE) offers opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development. It enables pupils to flourish individually within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society and global community.

Our RE curriculum is accessible to all pupils and encourages children to reflect on their own beliefs and ask questions about the world around them. Pupils will develop their knowledge of different faiths and an understanding of their own beliefs, values and experiences. We empower children to show mutual respect and tolerance towards the beliefs of others and to recognise what makes each and every one of us individual and unique.

Implementation

At Avenue, RE is implemented in accordance with the Sutton SACRE syllabus. We ensure that the topics studied in RE build upon prior learning. We offer opportunities for children of all abilities to develop their skills and knowledge in each unit, and we ensure that the planned progression built into the scheme of work offers children an increasing challenge as they move through the school. RE is planned in three phases (long term, medium term and short term) and the subject leader works closely with teaching staff to monitor and review the plans based on the requirements from the syllabus.

To ensure that RE is diverse for all pupils needs and backgrounds, lessons support pupils in their understanding of religion within a multi-cultural context, as well as promoting religious, cultural and racial understanding. Pupils at Avenue will gain knowledge and understanding of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism (KS1 & 2) and Buddhism (KS2).

Impact

RE at Avenue has important role in preparing children for adult life, employment and lifelong learning, as well as developing understanding for the key British values. It enables children to develop respect for and sensitivity to others, promotes discernment and enables children to combat prejudice. In these ways it contributes to children’s wellbeing, enhances spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) developmentand promotes ways in which communities can live and work together.

Our curriculum provides all children with opportunities to learn about religion and learn from religion. Pupils are able to observe, enquire, reflect and evaluate their learning experiences. They are encouraged to discuss how the learning relates to their own experiences and to think about the important messages, morals and values they can gain from traditional stories. Collective worship and assemblies link with our school values and provide children with the chance to think about important questions relating to religious and moral issues.
