Rights Respecting- Climate Change

This year our pupils have learnt about climate change and what they can do to help prevent it.  The key stage 2 children were very interested in this topic and had important views on their future and climate change.  They wrote their own articles about climate change, informing others of the current situation and what we can do to improve it.  Congratulations to the following children whose work was sent to our new local MP Luke Taylor.

Woodrow Day 2

The children were up, washed and hungry for breakfast nice and early this morning! There was a choice of waffles, croissants, toast, fruit, yoghurt and cereal… Some wisely decided to have it all!

After breakfast the children headed out for our activities, including High Ropes (Crate Stack and Traverse Challenge), bushcraft, shelter build, pioneering and team exercise.

Lunch was a gammon or halloumi with potatoes and peas with options to add noodles, vegetables and coleslaw. After lunch, the children had some free time to play outside or chat to their friends. Then the children had more activities (swapped over), followed by a delicious dinner of pizza, tortilla chips and salad followed by chocolate and berries flapjack for dessert.

In the evening, the children will have a campfire where we will sing songs and tell stories. We will enjoy a hot chocolate and a biscuit before we head to bed.

The children are all having a wonderful time so please don’t worry about them! They have had a great experience and learnt so much! They have tried new foods, worked as a team, helped and supported each other and faced their fears. They have made their teachers proud of them and represented Avenue school well.

From the Year 4 Team

Miss Spencer would like to thank all the staff who have helped prepare for the trip and the staff who have been on the trip with the children for three days.

We aim to return to Dorset Road for 4pm but the school will message to confirm this based on how our journey goes. Please wait to one side on Dorset Road and allow staff to get the children off the bus, gather their belongings and take them into the school playground. Once we are all inside and organised, we will invite you in to collect your child. Please allow the staff the time to do this to make this process as quick as possible. Thank you.

Year 6 Fiver Challenge.

You and your child are invited to the Year 6 Fiver Challenge!

This is an exciting activity where each group of Year 6 children is given a £5 budget to create a product to sell.  You are invited to come and buy those products.

Dates:

Wednesday 19th and Wednesday 26th June

Venue:

The School Field (Via Avenue Road Gate)

Time:

3:05pm-3:45pm

Please collect your child as usual and then walk to the field where you will be able to buy a range of products.

All of the money raised goes towards the Year 6 leavers' celebrations.

Thank you,

The Year 6 Team

Woodrow Day 1 12/6/24

The children have had a great first day at Woodrow High House.

We had a good journey here on the coach and the children cheered and clapped excitedly as they spotted the sign indicating that we had arrived at Woodrow! When we arrived, the children told staff that they were hoping to improve several skills, including teamwork, listening, resilience and perseverance! But above all, to have fun!

This was quickly followed by the first activity – Orienteering! The children enjoyed collaborating with their peers to solve clues and learn more the Woodrow site.

The afternoon activities included archery, shelter building, challenge course and bushcraft! The children really developed their skills during these activities and challenged themselves to complete different tasks.

For dinner the children enjoyed burgers, fries with salad. Following a hearty dinner, the children went to their rooms to make their beds! Here we worked on perseverance. With a bit of help, everyone managed this.

The children are now participating in their evening activities (games and free play outside) so they’re nice and tired later for bed (or so Miss Spencer and the Year 4 team hope).

They are fully embracing all that Woodrow has to offer and we are incredibly proud of everyone.

We are all excited about tomorrow will bring!

Woodrow day 2 - photos

Woodrow 2024 - Day 2

After an early(!) start…the children eagerly got themselves ready for the day ahead. We can assure you that judging by the toothpaste around their mouths, their teeth were brushed!

After a breakfast of croissants, waffles, toast, cereal and fruit the children and adults were well stocked up and ready to begin the days activities. The groups rotated to try out the activities that they had not done yesterday and once again rose to the occasion and challenged themselves to: climb higher, shoot more accurately, build a fire and develop their team work and resilience skills.

They then had a fajita lunch before returning to the afternoon’s activities which once again were embraced with a huge amount of perseverance and wonderful supportive cheers which enabled everyone to reach their own potential.

Following dinner, the children got their rooms ready for bed before heading out once again, this time for a campfire. They all enjoyed a delicious cup of hot chocolate with a biscuit and talked about their Woodrow adventure!

The children have had a wonderful time at Woodrow and have made us all very proud. They have demonstrated: kindness, empathy, independence and have been very polite, and most of them can now make their own bed!!

Tomorrow we have a morning of activities before the coach arrives about 2pm to bring us home.

I would like to extend my thanks to the wonderful staff that have accompanied the children this week and made your children's trip away so enjoyable :)

We aim to return to Dorset Road for 4pm but the school will message to confirm this based on how our journey goes. Please wait to one side on Dorset Road and allow staff to get the children off the bus, gather their belongings and take them into the School playground. The children have had a wonderful first day at Woodrow High House and are currently enjoying their evening activities before settling into their rooms for bed.

We had a good journey here on the coach and the children cheered excitedly as they spotted the sign indicating that we had arrived at Woodrow! When we arrived, the children told staff that they were hoping to improve a number of skills, including: teamwork, listening, resilience and perseverance! But above all, to have fun! The staff then took the children on a tour of the house that they will be staying in for the next 2 nights.

This was quickly followed by the first activity – Orienteering! The children enjoyed collaborating with their peers to solve clues and learn more about the perimeter of Woodrow.

The afternoon activities included: archery, shelter building, challenge course, pioneering and team exercise! The children really developed their skills during these activities and happily went outside of their comfort zones to complete different tasks.

Following a hearty dinner, the children went to their rooms to make their beds! With a bit of help, everyone managed this (including the adults!).

The children are now participating in their evening activities (a quiz and a rounders game) before getting ready for bed!

They are fully embracing all that Woodrow has to offer and we are incredibly proud of everyone.

We are all excited about tomorrow will bring!

World Thinking Day and Founders Day

Thursday 22nd February 2024

Thursday 22nd February, is the annual Thinking Daywhere all members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are encouraged to celebrate, reflect on and renew the promise that they make shortly after joining.

This means that any child who attends a Girlguiding Rainbow, Brownie or Guide unit is invited to wear their uniform to school on that day should they wish to.

Thursday 22nd February is also Founders day for the Scouting movement and any child who attends Beavers, Cubs or Scouts is invited to wear their uniform to school on that day should they wish to.

Children’s Mental Health Week

This week, the children have enjoyed celebrating children's mental health week. The theme for this year has been 'My Voice Matters'. The children enjoyed sharing their likes and dislikes and came up with their dream day. We reminded the children to use our pupil voice groups, like the School Council, to ensure that their voices are listened to at school.

Young Artists' Summer Show

The Young Artists’ Summer Show is a wonderful opportunity for UK-based artists and schools to engage creatively in the making and sharing of a piece of artwork that truly expresses their own voice.

For a chance to exhibit your work at the Royal Academy of Arts both online and onsite, please read the follow guidance and attachments.

There is no theme and artists aged 4-19 can submit a wide range of works which may include drawing, painting, printing, photography, sculpture, textile, fashion, animation, video, or surprise us!

You are required to complete the permissions form which must be attached for us to be able to submit your child's work.

The art work must be completed independently by your child.

Each submission can include a short artist statement ideally by the child.

Please can all art works, that wish to be submitted, be returned to the school office by  Wednesday 20th March.

Happy Creating!

To Parents and Carers,

We have become aware of a large number of children wearing scarves during the Winter months. Unfortunately these pose a safety risk to our children - a choking risk-  and therefore we will not be allowing children to wear these to school. Coats can be zipped up fully to keep children warm.

We hope that you understand why this has been necessary and support the School to keep our children safe.

Many thanks,

Miss Guy

Remembrance Day Parade 2023

Thank you to Miss. Walls, Mrs. Stock, Mr. Burke and our Avenue Ambassadors for representing the school at the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday 12th November.

They took part in the parade and then laid a wreath on the Belmont cenotaph.

They represented us all so beautifully and made us very proud.

On Monday 13th November, Year 4 had a visit from SES Water. World Mental Health Day

Today, we have celebrated World Mental Health Day. The theme of the day has been 'Mental Health is a universal right' and the children have completed a range of activities to help them to understand this. We focused on the idea of being kind, not only to others, but to yourself too.

The children played kindness bingo throughout the day which included things such as 'say hello to someone new' and 'write down 3 things you love about you.' All of the children finished the day by writing themselves a kindness postcard, remembering a time where they had done something great.

Dear parents and carers,

We have had a fantastic first week in Year 4 and the children have all settled in very well. We have enjoyed getting to know them this week and are looking forward to starting more of our learning next week. As part of our topic and DT learning, we will be making shoebox rainforests - please can all children bring in a cardboard box (shoebox size) on Monday 11th September. We also have our Zoolab visit next week. If you haven't already, please can you go onto Arbor and make the contribution of £10.

Swimming

Hi, just a reminder of Year 4's swimming days:

Tuesday - 4O

Wednesday - 4M

Thursday - 4L and 4W

Friday - 4S

Please ensure that you child has their swimming kit (swimming costume or shorts, swimming hat, towel, flipflops (optional) and goggles (optional)) in school on their swimming days as every child must take part.

Please see below a letter from our Trust explaining that our school is NOT affected by the recent reports of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC).

Sun Safety

As the warm weather is still with us, we need to continue with sun safety.

Please provide your child with a named sun hat and ensure that they have a named plastic water bottle (with sports cap opening).

If your child requires sun cream, please ensure they apply it before school. If you wish them to reapply sun cream before breaktimes, lunchtimes or outdoor PE, please provide them with a named bottle. Staff are not allowed to apply sun cream to children, so please ensure that your child can apply it themselves.
