Woodrow Trip 2 Day 3

Day 3

Dear Parents/Carers,

Last night’s campfire was so much fun (ask me to sing you the pirate song!) We had showers and went to bed straight after and in record time… We were all asleep!

This morning we had a choice of sausage, beans, hash browns and beans as well as cereal and toast.

We are doing more activities now and then we will have lunch (fish and chips is on the menu), have a final play outside and head home.

We have had a wonderful experience and learnt so much! We’ve tried new foods, worked as a team, helped and supported each other and faced our fears.

We’ve made our own beds, packed our own bags, remembered to apply suncream and listened to all our teachers and instructors. We’ve made our teachers proud of us and represented Avenue school well.

We will be tired, grumpy (and possibly smelly) when we return but rest assured… WE HAVE HAD A BALL!

Love Year 4

Woodrow Trip 2 Day 2

Day 2

Dear Parents/Carers,

Everyone had a good night’s sleep and we were up, washed and hungry for breakfast nice and early this morning! We had the choice of fruit, cereal, cheese twist or waffles.

Then we headed out for our activities. Everyone is remembering to be sun safe and drink lots of water, wear their hats and reapply suncream. We are surrounded by shady trees and have breaks when needed.

Lunch was pizza (margherita, pepperoni, or vegetable) and a salad bar. Then we had some free time to play outside, colour inside or chat to our friends. After that we had more activities, followed by a delicious dinner of pasta (with cheese sauce or tomato sauce) and salad.

We had some time to relax and play with our friends on the grass and under trees. We had a fun campfire singing silly songs and we are about to get ready for bed. We are all having a wonderful time so please don’t worry about us!

Woodrow Trip 2 - Day 1

Day 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

The coach journey was nice and quick and we arrived in good time to start our adventure! We went straight into a tour of the facilities and an orienteering task. After that, we ate our delicious packed lunches in the shade. Then, we got into our groups and enjoyed our first activity. We then had a break to refill our water bottles (and re-apply suncream) before we started our second activity.

We had a delicious dinner of noodles and sponge pudding, and then we went to our rooms to make our beds.

We are now outside playing so that we’re nice and tired later for bed (or so the teachers hope?!)

We know that the weather is continuing to be hot so please be assured that we are being safe in the sun. The children have breaks between activities to reapply suncream and refill their water bottles. They are wearing their hats all the time. Many of the activities are in the woods where it is sheltered and cool and when we are not in the woods, we are never far from the shelter of a tree.

Woodrow Trip 1 Day 3

Day 3

Dear Parents/Carers,

Last night’s campfire was so much fun (ask me to sing you the ‘I’m a nut’ song!) We went to bed straight after and in record time… We were all asleep!

This morning we had a choice of sausage, beans or potatoes and cereal and toast.

We did our final activities and then had jacket potatoes with beans or tuna followed by a refreshing ice lolly. We had a final chance to play with our friends before we got on the coaches to head home.

We have had a wonderful experience and learnt so much! We’ve tried new foods, worked as a team, helped and supported each other and faced our fears. We’ve made our teachers proud of us and represented Avenue school well.

We will be tired, grumpy (and possibly smelly) when we return but rest assured… WE HAVE HAD A BALL!

Woodrow Trip 1 Day 2

Day 2

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thanks to lots of fans keeping the rooms cool, everyone had a good night’s sleep and we were up, washed and hungry for breakfast nice and early this morning! We had the choice of fruit, yoghurt, cereal, toast, waffles and cheese twists… some wisely decided to have it all!

Then we headed out for our activities. The weather has been amazing and everyone is remembering to drink lots of water, wear their hats and reapply suncream.

Lunch was a chicken or vegetable wrap with salad and rice and then we had some free time to play outside or chat to our friends. Then we had more activities, followed by a delicious dinner of hot dogs (with vegan option) with wedges followed by marble cake for dessert.

We’re having some down time now outside and we’ll be off for our campfire later to sing songs and tell stories before we head to our beds. We are all having a wonderful time so please don’t worry about us!

Woodrow Trip 1 Day 1

Day 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

The coach journey was fairly quick and we arrived in good time to start our adventure! We went straight into a quick tour of the facilities. Then we did orienteering in groups and used maps to find different points of interests. After that we had lunch in the shade of the trees. We refilled our water bottles (and re-applied suncream) and then got into our activity groups. We enjoyed our first activity but heard the rumbling of thunder. For safety we went back into the house and we moved our stuff into our bedrooms. Then we played wacky races in the sports hall such as elephant relay.

We had a delicious dinner of pasta and sauce with flapjack for dessert. Then we went to our rooms to make our beds.

We had planned on playing outside, but the rain is pouring down (which has at least cooled us down). We are going to have a fun quiz with a snack and play some team games in the hall so we’re nice and tired later for bed (or so Miss Spencer and Mrs Morgan hope)

Next week (22nd-26th May) we are taking part in Living Streets Walk to School Week. This fun and engaging week-long activity for primary schools has been built to make pupils experience first-hand the importance of walking to school.

Through this challenge, children will be well on their way to reaching their recommended 60 minutes minimum of physical activity per day before even reaching the school gates!

This year's challenge encourages children to travel actively to school every day of the week. Meeting various animals along the way, they'll learn about the important reasons to walk and the difference it can make for individuals, communities and the planet!

On Thursday and Friday, our Year 6 Eco Reps will be handing out Walk to School badges for those children that have walked some/all of the week to celebrate their achievements.

Happy walking!

Coronation Day Celebrations

What a wonderful day! Everyone looked amazing in their red, white and blue and spent the morning making flags and crowns for the parade.

The parade was held on the main field and started with a rousing rendition of “The Sound of the Trumpets” (a specially commissioned coronation song for schools).

Following that, each year group paraded around the field whilst everyone clapped and waved their flags.

Just at the end of the parade the heavens opened but, in true British style, we carried on regardless! (It’s what the King would have wanted).

We hope you all have a glorious coronation weekend.

RIGHTS RESPECTING - UNICEF CAMPAIGN

As a rights respecting school we are taking part in UNICEF UK’s OutRight campaign this year.

The rights respecting class reps are leading pupils in an activity to create a poster showing why we think healthcare is important for all children.  A selection of posters from the school will be displayed in the school or sent to Unicef to be used as part of the OutRight campaign.

OutRight Campaign:

Through OutRight children and young people are supported to learn about, and speak out on, children’s right to the best possible health and how strong health systems support this. As part of UNICEF UK’s efforts to promote children’s voices we want to make sure that decision-makers of all kinds understand:

• why this is an issue that children and young people care about

• how health and health systems affect children’s rights

We plan to do this by sharing children’s work on this critical children’s rights issue, with an important decision maker and their team at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK Government.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Get set… we’re taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2023 the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from 20-31 March. It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved.

What do you need to do?

Encourage your child(ren) to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event.

Why we are taking part:

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing.

Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A 2021 YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school. And that children thought active travel was the best away to bring down these pollution levels.

Plus there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part!

Useful resources

To help you prepare, Sustrans has developed a handy free guide to walking, cycling or scooting to school. It is packed with advice to help you have hassle-free journey to school.

Download your free family guide using this link: https://www.sustrans.org.uk/sign-up-to-receive-your-free-school-run-guide/

For more information about the event go to www.bigwalkandwheel.org.uk . Enjoy the challenge!

Our Linguascope subscription has been renewed for this academic year. The login details have been shared with you via email, as we cannot post these online. Linguascope is a fantastic resource which allows children to practise their skills in a range of languages through games and interactive activities. We will be using some of these in our KS2 French lessons, but we would also love to encourage the children to practise at home. To access Linguascope, you can either download the app or visit https://www.linguascope.com

Dear parents/carers of Year 4

During the week beginning 12th September, we will be designing and making our own mini rainforests. Please can your child bring in a shoe box to create the rainforest in. They may also want to bring in any other resources they may find useful, for example, coloured papers or perspex, plastic flowers, beads, pine cones, pipe-cleaners or small pictures of rainforest animals/plants. These resources should not be bought specifically but can be brought in if children already have them at home.

Many thanks,

Your children’s teachers have planned wonderful activities to welcome the children into their new classes and will be spending time getting to know your child and helping them feel confident as they begin the new year.

If you also have a child in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, please drop and collect your children off via the Dorset Road gate and follow the guidance on your younger child’s pick-up times and locations. Please note, only children with siblings in Nursery to Year 2 should use the Dorset Road gate.

Although resources will be provided in school, if your child wishes to bring their own pencil cases then they can but please ensure that this, and the contents, is fully labelled.

Please ensure that your child’s P.E kit is in school from the start of term and again,  each item is clearly labelled with their name and class.  The children will require their P.E. kit during the first week of school and this should include trainers for outdoor use.
